I’m finally done with school for the summer, this gives me more time to focus on fun stuff, like Twitter. Following new people, unfollowing others. Twitter is time-consuming, yes, and dare I say, entertaining, but the information you can gather from it is often quite valuable. Pushing my (already voracious) information obsession further with Twitter, I’m extracting this value with more rapidity.
Maybe you noticed, I now show the most recent “tweets” of the people I follow, within color-coded floated divs, but only on the “home” page. But what you see is only the half of it. On my end there are additional controls. I could create a “login” interface, a “user” database, and all that (out of the kindness of my heart) and you could see those additional controls. But dear Joe Blow, that’s not my style.
There are advantages to proprietary systems. Unique perspectives, unique implementations, it’s what makes the web worthwhile.
If you’re an “open source” person, this philosophy may catch you off-guard. Think about Picasso for a minute. You can look at one of his paintings, see it right there in front of you, and still have no idea where he’s coming from. You don’t know the mental process he used, how he held his brush that day, etc. Probably you don’t care, but the painting is worth millions nonetheless. He could stop and explain every little decision he made, “open source” his ideas, provide “technical support” to make the analogy complete, but all that takes time, time away from painting.
So here’s what I’m offering. If you have an idea for a custom Twitter implementation, just for you, something 100% original, let me know. My email address is on pjbrunet.com, or leave me a comment here with your contact info.
