For a massive social site like Facebook (or MySpace, for that matter), negotiations with the state attorneys general inevitably go beyond child safety. Security and identity theft, such as the threat of malicious “phishing” for personal information, are also hot issues.
The News.com article also mentions “age verification technology” which opens a big can of worms. Now that wireless connections are more popular it will be harder to know who is connecting to the Internet. As for verifying identity, even these “name of your favorite pet” questions are too common to be trusted much longer, IMO.
Back when I was in school we required “callback verification” which hung up the connection and called your home asking for a secret code. People were more honest online because we (sysops) had your phone number.
