Myspace claims to be your “bedroom” in the Internet, music playing, pictures on the wall. But Myspace has little to do with actual space, it’s flat.
Within that flatness there’s flexibility the painter in me appreciates. Why is Myspace so flexible? Because with CSS you have almost complete control over the look of your page, you can make almost anything happen on that flat surface. Yes, they limit what sites you can link to, you can’t use Javascript, etc. But they aren’t too restrictive. Let me quote the [Edit Profile] page:
Do not use HTML/CSS to cover MySpace advertisements.
Sounds simple enough, right? Not really. Notice they don’t say, “You can’t cover Myspace ads because we figured out how to detect that specifically to catch bandwidth thieves without simultaneously disabling all the beautiful designs you’ve poured your hearts into.”
That one sentence implies: Move stuff around, let your creativity run wild, just don’t cover the ads that pay our bills.
What will you use Myspace for? You’re limited by your imagination, pretty much. Whereas Facebook is more menu-driven, you make choices. And as far as I know you’re stuck with white-and-blue. Windows 3.1 flashback?
And finally: Myspace is less intimidating because it’s friendly for beginners. This is why geeks criticize Myspace but this is its greatest strength. Which is why with all my advanced programming and graphics knowhow I’m here writing about simple Myspace with its clumsy “table” tags and AJAX-free interface. Facebook is the “ivory tower” of social networks. For everyone else there’s Myspace.
