The proper way to do it, learn PHP, and you’ll need a hosting account. You use an “img src” tag to call a PHP program that looks like a .gif, but instead of showing a graphic that program looks at the server environment in order to capture the IP address. You can figure out how to do this by going to a bookstore and buying a “PHP Visual Quickstart Guide”. Then you need another program to take the IP address and do a “reverse lookup” on the IP.

thanks for responding… how can i log their IP addresses and figure out their city?

There’s no way to know, but there are ways to record an IP address. With an IP address you can guess what city the person is in, but it’s not 100% accurate. And also with an IP address you can cross-reference if you have a lot of time on your hands. For example you could send someone an email and when they open it you know what their IP address is.
